Under Construction and Down for Demolition

Playground Under ConstructionPlayground construction projects often involve two steps: demolition and construction. Used playground equipment often features outdated safety panels that can be hazardous to children. Although some companies will try to sell playground refurbishing services such as repainting, the equipment will need constant maintenance once these steps are started. Lead paint and wood playgrounds should generally be removed and not fixed. It is often better for an organization to completely remove an unsafe playground than allow temporary fixes. This is not to say that damaged equipment cannot be fixed, however there comes a point in the age of equipment where the price of a fix is more or higher than a replacement or removal.

Landscape the Playscape

Landscape the PlayscapeLarge boulders were placed on the outside perimeter of this playground to add visual appeal and blend into the existing landscaping of the neighborhood. When placing stones and hardscapes on a playground, be sure all stones are well outside of the play area to reduce injuries. The borders of the playground are elevated at one end as the grade of the site did not permit a simple above ground installation. The area was graded prior to installation of equipment, however, the area still required border to be placed below ground in some areas. Not doing so would result in surfacing material accumulating in one end and eventually escaping the play area. This is a common occurrence on playgrounds that are installed over grass. Often grade is overlooked or thought to not be a problem. These playgrounds often require new surfacing material each year to replace that which has escaped.
