According to many news sources, over 100 people were affected by heat-related illnesses at the Indianapolis 500. At a major sporting event such as the Indy 500 it is very difficult to stay completely out of the sun. How can we learn from this event? Simple logic says when it is hot, try to stay out of the sun. As most playgrounds are designed with limited sun protection, it is very difficult for children to abide by this simple logic. Large plastic roofs can provide a minimal amount of shade. Often plastic roofs simply add to overall aesthetics more than meaningful shade. However, post mounted shade canopies offer maximum protection under the sun. A fabric or steel shade can be added to almost any play structure, incorporating shade and play into one can often reduce overall costs of a project.
Other than reducing heat on the playground, a shade can reduce the instance of skin burns. Skin burns are common summer injuries on custom playground installations not designed by certified manufacturers. When steel comes into direct contact with sunlight it will become hot. If a reference is required, simply touch a car that is exposed to direct sunlight for 6-8 hours. Now imagine that feeling while sliding down a slide for ten or more feet. A shade structure can protect playgrounds, parking lots, pool areas, and outdoor seating areas. The possibilities and need for use of shade structures is an ever-expanding market as the value of human life and well-being is immeasurable.
