Frequently Asked Questions

What depth of mulch do these 6 foot landscape timbers contain?
These timbers stand 12 inches high and will contain mulch depths up to 10 inches with proper installation. The 30-inch spikes anchor each timber 18 inches into the ground, leaving 12 inches above grade for containment. Most commercial playgrounds use 9-12 inches of engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch for ASTM F1487 impact attenuation requirements.
Why aren't these landscape timbers recommended for sand or pea gravel surfacing?
Sand and pea gravel flow through gaps between timber joints and around end connections, making containment ineffective. These materials also create drainage issues when blocked by solid borders. Engineered wood fiber and rubber mulch compress against the timber face and stay contained. Your site plan should specify loose-fill surfacing materials compatible with perimeter containment systems.
How many 6 foot landscape timbers do I need for a typical playground border?
Calculate your playground perimeter in feet and divide by 6 to determine timber quantity. A 30x40 foot play area requires 24 timbers (140 feet perimeter ÷ 6 = 23.3, rounded up). Add 10% for waste and future repairs. Each timber includes one 30-inch galvanized spike for installation into compacted subgrade per manufacturer specifications.
