Frequently Asked Questions

What type of playground surfacing works with 4x4 landscape timbers?
These landscape timbers work with rubber mulch, wood chips, and engineered wood fiber. They are not recommended for pea gravel or sand as the loose material will shift around the spike attachment system. The 12-inch height contains loose-fill surfacing up to 9 inches deep with room for settling.
How deep does the spike penetrate for secure installation?
The 30-inch galvanized spike penetrates 18 inches into the ground after the 12-inch timber is positioned. This depth provides secure anchoring in most soil conditions including clay and packed earth. You'll need a sledgehammer or post driver for installation.
How many landscape timbers do I need for a typical playground border?
Each 4-foot section covers 48 inches of perimeter. Measure your playground area and divide by 4 to determine quantity needed. A 20x30 foot play area requires 25 timbers for complete containment. Order 2-3 extra pieces to account for corners and future repairs.
